Delightful Dullstroom: a town to lose yourself

Thursday, May 10, 2012

On our journey to Gethlane Lodge, which you can read about here, if you missed it, we drove through a charming little town called Dullstroom.

Dullstroom is according to Wikipedia, one of the coldest towns in the province of Mpumalanga. I should know, I stayed there once when the temperature was heading towards the zero degree mark. I’ll tell you about that in a separate post.

This picturesque town was established in 1883 and is one of the country’s favourite flyfishing destinations.

A large crowd of people will come to this little town just to escape the city and have some lunch. Roughly a two hour drive from Johannesburg, the town provides a refreshing get-away with its serene and carefree atmosphere.

Flip and I walked from the one side of the dorpie (as we would call it in Afrikaans) and dived and ducked into all the little shops. One particular shoppe had a whole rack, pardon my pun, full of sex-paraphernalia. I found it too amusing, particularly a box full of jelly boobs sweets.

I have also visited this town a few times on occasion with my parents and one of our favourite restaurants here is Harries Pancakes. Imagine fluffy, thick pancakes, stuffed to the brim with trout, or pretty much any filling you can think of! It has been life long tradition to stop and enjoy one of their delectable dishes! This time we were in quite a hurry and Flip doesn’t like the taste of it. Pity. The fool.

The rest of the photos are just some of the lovely sites we saw in the dorpie! Enjoy .

Some delicious Meringue
